Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market in Photos
I love going to markets in other countries. It’s always interesting to see what kinds of things are for sale, what the prices are, if anyone haggles, and it can make for some entertaining people watching. I went to a night market in Hong Kong a few years ago and bought a knock-off Jimmy Choo purse for about US$19 after bargaining down the price, and I loved the relaxed atmosphere of the night market in Luang Prabang. One of my last days in Melbourne, Genevieve and I wandered through Queen Victoria Market, which is enormous. They sell all sorts of things such as meats and cheeses, produce, flowers, clothing, accessories, pets, luggage, and they even have a small food court. Aside from delicious fish and chips for lunch, we only bought some fruit at the market, but it was a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
Seeing all this great food made me wish I had come here earlier in my visit to Melbourne so I could have bought some things to make dinner with at the hostel. Instead I just settled for buying an apple for a snack.
I seriously considered buying one of these T-shirts. The Thundercats may have won me over if I had seen them on a T-shirt.
Queen Victoria Market is located on the corner of Victoria and Elizabeth Streets. Click here for opening hours and other information.

I think you captured the best of the Queen Victoria Market in your post. The deli area where they sell all the food is great if you get there early or at the end of the day when they’re getting rid of product and discounting big time. The fruit and veg section is not too bad but the rest of it too me is like what I said to you one time. That was that there is a lot of repetition especially when it comes to clothes and watches. The souvenirs that they sell there to me are cheap and tacky and usually aren’t even made in Australia let alone in Melbourne. For me it’s a place I go past often but never actually go to anymore. By the way did you check out the pizza at La Porchetta by any chance. That place is pure Melbourne through and through and there is a La Porchetta restaurant that is across the road from the Queen Victoria Market. I’ve eaten there a couple of times and I can tell you from experience the food there is brilliant.

Thanks Matthew! I agree about the souvenirs, most of it looked tacky and I didn’t even consider buying any of it. I was much more interested in wandering around in the food sections of the market. I missed La Porchetta, sounds like I missed a great place though. I’ll keep it in mind if I ever get back to Melbourne though. Now you have me craving pizza!

Markets are sweet. It’s crazy how every place you go to there is something a little different but they are all pretty much the same, yet still amazing. Great pics!

I agree, you pretty much know what you’re going to get but they’re still really great. Thanks!

Food markets are my favourite part of any city. That deli meet looks fantastic.

I love visiting local markets! They’re so interesting and I can spend a whole day going to a market from another! I’ve never been to Queen Victoria market in Melbourne but it seems so amazing and a really good place to have a tasty meal!

We were lucky enough to be staying right across the street when we were in Melbourne! LOVE! Did you try the donuts?! Local markets are one of my favorite places to visit when traveling. Great pictures!

Thanks! Sounds like a great location! No, I didn’t try the donuts unfortunately. There was a little stand with different salsas and jellies, so I tried some of that.

I’m totally with you: love visiting markets when I travel. I should do it more when I am at home as well, but when I’m on the road it’s always more fun because you can buy little souvenirs that then later remind you of your trip 🙂 Great colors in your pics!

Thanks Sabrina! It was a fun market, though I was much more interested in the food section!
