How Much I Spent Traveling in Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is one of the most popular areas of Italy for travelers. The row of tiny fishing villages impress visitors with colorful buildings clinging to the coast and hiking trails up on the cliffs. I went for a weekend solo trip while Andy was geeking out at a comic book festival in Lucca. Though it wasn’t my best solo trip, I’d still recommend visiting during a trip to Italy. Here’s how much I spent traveling in Cinque Terre for a weekend.
Total Cinque Terre travel costs
Amounts are listed in euros and US dollars using 1€ = US$1.25, the exchange rate at the time of travel. As I write this, the exchange rate is much better for American travelers visiting euro countries.
115€ / $143.75 – accommodation
53.70€ / $67.13 – transportation
47.50€ / $59.38 – food
216.20€ / $270.25 – total
Hotel cost in Cinque Terre – 115€
For two nights, I stayed at a small bed and breakfast on the newer side of Monterosso. It was a simple place, not much to it, but it was comfortable enough and included breakfast. You can stay in any of the five villages, plus any other village in the area, but make sure you know your food and transport options if you stay in one of the smaller towns, especially if it’s not one of the five. I averaged 57.50€ per night, though you could easily spend more at a nicer place.
Transportation costs in Cinque Terre – 53.70€
My biggest items in the transportation category were my train tickets from Pisa to Santa Margherita at 20.80€ and from Monterosso to Pisa at 12€. Everything else cost 5€ or less for one direction, whether it was a train, bus, or shuttle van. I even included the elevator that takes people from the train level up to higher ground in Riomaggiore. Cinque Terre train passes cost 4€ and allow you to travel on any train between the villages in one direction.
Cost of food in Cinque Terre – 47.50€
Since I was traveling alone, I didn’t have any alcohol. My breakfast was included with the hotel, and I mostly ate sandwiches or foccacia for lunch. I ate at a sit-down restaurant for dinner both nights, but nothing fancy. I averaged 23.75€ per day on food for two days in Cinque Terre.
I didn’t feel like there were too many activities in Cinque Terre, so I didn’t spend anything on entertainment.
As you can see, this was not an expensive weekend for me. You could definitely spend more by staying at a more expensive hotel and eating at fancier restaurants. Taking a boat along the coast during high or shoulder season or any other activities that interest you will add to your costs. But overall, I don’t think it’s hard to see Cinque Terre on a small budget. I averaged 108.10€ per day traveling for two days in Cinque Terre, and more than half of that was my accommodation.
